About Me
organizing a warehouse for safety

Do you have all of the organizational equipment that you need to keep your storage areas organized and safe? If not, now is the time to begin looking into the industrial shelving that is manufactured for businesses just like yours. It was not until I lost a lot of product due to a stack of pallets falling over that I knew just how important it was to have shelving to stack the pallets of goods on. Sure, I was able to file a claim and retrieve some of the lost money, but it had a severely negative impact on my business. Learn more about how I reorganized my warehouse and improved the situation for my business, my employees and my customers.

3 Important Types Of Hydraulic Seals

Sam Gomez

Machinery can often be complex and temperamental; something as small as a missing bolt or an improper seal could cause the machine to malfunction. Hydraulic seals play an important role in allowing modern machinery to function properly.

If you are new to the world of machine maintenance and trying to determine which type of hydraulic seals you need to invest in to keep your machines running properly, here are some options to consider.

1. Compression Rings

If the machine you are working with relies on a combustion engine for power, then you might want to consider investing in some spare compression rings. The compression ring is a type of hydraulic seal that is located in the groove that is closest to the piston head.

Since liquid leaking into the combustion chamber could result in a loss of power, the compression ring acts as a seal to prevent liquid from gaining access. Having spare compression rings on hand will ensure that your machine's pistons are able to work properly.

2. Rod Seals

The stationary part of the combustion chamber in your machine's combustion engine is referred to as the cylinder head. Just as the pistons need to be protected from liquid leakage during operation, liquid must be kept out of the combustion chamber as well. This is best accomplished by having functioning rod seals in place.

Rod seals come in both single-acting and double-acting varieties, so it's important that you know which type of hydraulic cylinder your rod seals will be protecting. Single-acting cylinders are those that rely on power to push upward, but take advantage of the pull of gravity to come back down. Double-acting cylinders need power to move both up and down. Be sure you have the right kind of rod seals on hand, and your machinery will run smoothly.

3. Wiper Seals

Many machines are located in an environment where dirt and debris are present. If these contaminants are allowed to find their way into your machine's combustion chamber, they can cause serious mechanical failure. To protect your machine's engine from environmental contaminants, most hydraulic chambers are fitted with wiper seals.

The wiper seal stays in contact with the exterior of the piston while it is in motion. Any gunk that accumulates on the surface of the piston is wiped away by the wiper seal before it gets carried into the combustion chamber. Ensuring that you have quality wiper seals in place at all times will help extend the life of your machinery.

Learning to maintain machines can be difficult, but understanding the important role hydraulic seals play can be helpful. Be sure that you keep compression rings, rod seals, and wiper seals on hand at all times, and you will be on your way to improving the quality of your machine's performance in the future.
