5 Tips For Properly Maintaining Your Band Saw

If you have a band saw that you would like to last for as long as possible, you will want to put forth some effort into properly maintaining it. To help you do this, you can make use of the following five tips.
Check The Band Saw Wheels
It is important to make sure that you are always reviewing the condition of the band saw tires or wheels every time you go to change the blade. This will ensure that you will always catch issues with the wheels before they get out of control. Keep an eye out for cracks, splits, or general wear on the wheels that would indicate that they need to be replaced.
Inspect The Belts
Make sure that you are inspecting the belts every few days to ensure proper functioning of your band saw. You will want to look for stretching, cracking, or splits in the bands. It is vital that you are immediately replacing any damaged belts. This way, you will never have to face any down time due to a sudden break in a belt during a big job.
Pay Attention To The Blade Tension
It is a good idea to make sure that you are inspecting the blade tension everyday. Make adjustments according to the manufacturer's recommendations. It is also important to make sure that you are releasing the tension in the blade when it will not be in use, such as over night or over the weekend. This will help increase the life of the blade.
Check The Transmission Oil Level
You may want to check the transmission oil level at least once a week. This will allow you to spot leaks before the oil runs dry, which could damage the machinery. This would also be a great time to closely inspect the gaskets and seals for leaks. If you are noticing a transmission oil leak in those spots, you will know that those pieces need to be replaced promptly.
Listen To The Band Wheel Bearings
At least once a week, you will want to find a moment to listen carefully to the band wheel bearings. The goal is to spot any unusual sounds, such as grinding or knocking. Also, noticing unusual movements of the bearings should indicate that they need to be replaced.
