Moving Air Around: Three Types Of Portable Industrial Air Compressors That Bring The Air To You

Sam Gomez

Most air compressors for shop work and art work are portable, but do not supply the type of air pressure and the amount of air flow you need for industrial work. What you really need are industrial air compressors, which supply an extensive amount of air at an adjustable pressure. There are three types of portable industrial air compressors from which to choose.

Open Frame Compressors

These are portable compressors designed for all of your outdoor work needs. They are lacking the encasements that other portable compressors have so that they can fit more easily through tight places. However, all the inner working components of the compressor are protected with all-weather compressor oil, weather-proof consoles and weather-proof parts either surrounded in a clear plastic or metal casing. They are ideal for on-site compressor drills and drivers.

Oil Free Compressors

Many portable industrial air compressors require oil to keep their parts moving properly. However, it can become quite inconvenient to remember the oil or pick some up if you are working in a very remote site. To alleviate that problem, air compressor manufacturers, like Sullair air compressors, have created oil free compressors. These large, boxy compressors are intimidating because of their size. The compressors are built that way to include extra components that do not require oiling, which makes them ideal for remote industrial work or as a back up for failed car detailing systems.

Trailer/ Tow Behind Industrial Air Compressors

These compressors are the more traditional industrial type. Any vehicle with a tow hitch can pick up and drop off a trailer/tow behind air compressor, and each machine in this category has a specific air pressure level. The smallest portable air compressor in this class produces 70-185 CFMs, while the largest one will give you 1300-1600 CFMs. You can buy them from a dealer, purchase them direct from a manufacturer, or rent them from a heavy duty equipment rental agency.

Connections for Most Portable Industrial Air Compressors

Usually all of these air compressors have their own attachments. In the event that you rent one of these compressors rather than buy it and it is missing the hoses that connect to the air ports, talk to the rental agency. Sometimes the compressors are rented out sans hoses because the rental agencies know industries have their own, or they are attempting to prevent theft of the hoses by requiring you to "bring your own".
