Inspection Advice For Pallet Rack Systems

Sam Gomez

Keeping a lot of pallets organized and protected around a worksite is easy thanks to pallet rack systems. If your company already has one set up, you'll need to inspect it periodically to make sure it's holding up. You'll succeed with this inspection if you follow this advice.

Look at Collision Reports

A good practice to have in place when caring for a pallet rack system is having operators report collisions with machinery whenever they happen. This event could have caused damage to the pallet rack, and you need to know quickly before the rack system collapses.

What you can do is look at any collision reports thoroughly. They should detail where and when the collision took place. Then you'll just need to review the area of impact and see if a repair is needed. If you don't see major damage, then you can resume using the pallet rack as you normally would.

Check Out the Frames Periodically

The frames are some of the most important parts of a pallet rack system and as a result, you need to inspect them as often as you can. Then if there is damage, it won't be neglected but rather restored before you face a major issue.

Some possible red flags to keep a lookout for when inspecting the frames on your pallet rack system include bent areas, rust, and chipped sections. All of these issues need to be professionally addressed sooner rather than later to maintain the structural integrity of said racking system.

See if Load Beams Are Deflecting

The load beams are another crucial element to inspect with a pallet rack system since they are the part that will be supporting pallets with various goods on top. You need to check for deflection in particular, which is basically bowing downward.

If this is starting to happen with any of the load beams, that's a sign you're overworking them and thus causing them to bend inward. You need to straighten the beams back out and then make sure you don't go over the suggested weight parameters going forward.

A pallet rack system is an amazing resource you can use to store a lot of pallets with goods in a safe and organized manner. As long as you know how to properly inspect yours at certain intervals, you won't let major issues go unchecked, and that's key in maximizing this investment.
