Sandblasting is a common technique used in manufacturing to prepare metal components for finishing. The sandblasting process can be messy, so many companies choose to create a dedicated space in which all sandblasting activities can take place.

These spaces are commonly known as sandblasting rooms.

In order to truly appreciate the value a sandblasting room can offer your company, you must familiarize yourself with the various processes that take place in sandblasting rooms.

1. Abrasive Blasting

Sandblasting requires the use of abrasive material. The abrasive of choice is typically a silica or quartz mix. Small particles are thrown against the surface of a metal component at a high velocity during the blasting phase.

The abrasiveness of the silica or quartz combined with the velocity at which these particles move can strip away rust, paint, and other surface imperfections.

2. Abrasive Recovery

Several recovery system options are available, with the most popular being sweepers, moving walls, air jets, and moving floors. These recovery systems help direct all materials into a centralized container for additional processing.

The final process completed in a sandblasting room is the recycling of used abrasive particles.

Silica or quartz particles can be used multiple times. Having the ability to recycle your abrasives can reduce spending and help you preserve the environment.

A sandblast recycling system features a number of screens and sorting stations that separate dust and debris from silica or quartz particles.

The dust and debris are funneled into a garbage bin for disposal. The abrasive particles are collected in a large bin. These particles can be returned to the blasting pots located inside a sandblasting room for use in the next sandblasting project.

A dedicated sandblasting room will help you contain all of your abrasive particles in a central location. You won't have to worry about these particles compromising your facility's air quality, and you can collect and recycle your abrasive particles to reduce spending.
