What Types Of Pipes Can You Use With Your Air Compressor?

Sam Gomez

When shopping for air compressor pipes for the first time, you might be surprised to find that there is a large variety of compressor pipes to choose from. This is because every air compressor is different and your setup might have unique needs. You'll need to know the pros and cons of each type of air compressor pipe before choosing one.

Black Iron

Most air compressor pipes are made out of steel, iron, copper, or aluminum. Black iron pipes are the oldest and most traditional types of air compressor pipes. They're commonly found on very old installations. They last a long time because of how durable black iron is.

Black iron pipes are heavier though and will need to be installed with a suspension system. Black iron pipes are also more difficult to cut than other types of pipes and you may need to hire a professional welder to do it for you.

Copper

A copper pipe is lighter than iron. It's also easier to install than other types of metal pipes such as stainless steel. The fittings are very standardized and easy to obtain. However, copper pipes are more expensive than other types of pipes given the high cost of copper.

Aluminum

Aluminum is typically used in environments where moisture and corrosion are a concern because aluminum is resistant to corrosion. Aluminum is also lighter than other types of metals. This makes it easier to install.

Stainless Steel

Many of the advantages found in the other types of metals can be found with stainless steel. It is light and corrosion-resistant like aluminum. It's durable like black iron. They also work great. However, like with black iron, you'll need to find a professional installer who can cut your stainless steel pipe so that it fits.

Plastic

If you consider metal to be too expensive, you consider plastic pipes instead. A plastic pipe will not corrode and is very light. It won't be damaged by air compressor oils. However, make sure to choose a plastic pipe that is very durable.

PVC Pipes Are Not Allowed

The OSHA does not allow PVC pipes to be used with compressed air systems. This type of plastic isn't considered to be durable enough to handle compressed air because the pipe will be placed under too much pressure. However, a metal pipe or a durable plastic pipe approved for use with air compressors might work perfectly for your industrial application.
